  1. Nice sexy voice. Kind of The Sexy Amazing Seller.

I see product customization as a narrowing down your target audience. It’s like a difference between broad versus exact keywords. With broad conversions are not as good as with exact but with exact demand is not as good as with broad. You either hit the mark or not which in your case you did hit your mark with audience match but demand was not there. You aimed for a half piece of a pie but got 1/4. But could you hit the mark with the other 1/4 which would get you that half piece you aimed for? I guess yes but it should require another customization and new order. The fact is if you had 4 products each taking 1/4 of entire pie you would dominate that market and be known as market expert outside of Amazon eventually. Isn’t it the ultimate goal you hear often? It’s all about your long term thinking and expectations.

What is the better or less risky way? To aim in the middle to get enough of both worlds like you mentioned. Should suffice to build the capital to reach your ultimate goal and go beyond Amazon, build own store and increase the value of a brand for a great exit that would allow you to retire to Bahamas.
